Trundl Streamlines & Automates Processes of Over Four Million Songs for Sony Music Publishing

Sony Music and Trundl

Nashville, TN – Sony Music Publishing, along with the assistance of Trundl, an Atlassian Platinum Solution Partner, have transformed their enterprise service management processes to save Sony over 1500 hours a year, while providing increased visibility to critical data. This overhaul of their technology systems provides faster, better services to all of their overseas affiliated offices and global songwriters.

As Sony says, “It’s all a part of their promise to take care of business and each other.”

1500+ hours saved each year with automation

Previously relying on email and internal drives to manage complex processes, the #1 music publishing company in the world was looking for a cohesive solution outside of their simple service desk that had been set up with Outlook rules and automations.

In 2020, Sony Music Publishing company’s Global Copyright Administration team (GCA) was handling the intake of publishing data with standard office software while the volume and complexity of requests continue to grow at a rapid rate.

“We were thrilled to be invited to take part in such a monumental project for one of the largest players in the music and music publishing industry.  We were confident that our team of engineers and developers could come up with a solution and streamlined process and workflow that would save Sony Music Publishing thousands of hours a year while providing them with a more organized system that has greater visibility into request data and status updates,” says Patrick Howell, Co-CEO of Trundl.

43+ automations to date

Behind every song we hear on our devices or in a movie we always recognize the star, the lead. But behind that lead there may also be additional songwriters who deserve equal recognition and equitable compensation. At the beginning of a songwriter’s career, the process is fairly easy to track – number of plays, purchased, etc…, but as the song grows in popularity and dispersed through hundreds if not thousands of channels, the complexity upticks.

Sony needed a way to track exploitations and ensure that all of the right people get paid on time – thus requiring best-in-class technology and teams who can manage large amounts of data and a sea of stakeholders.

That’s where Trundl and Jira Service Management came into play to implement a new way to take in requests, fullfill those requests, collaborate, integrate, and report.

They’re now doing business like never before.

We’ve built over 200 automations to date. Even if the company saves two minutes per day per automation, that’s almost 1,500 hours of operational savings each year. And that doesn’t even account for context switching or the time you would have spent building reports. Now it’s all at your fingertips,” says Jeff Pittman, Director of IT Operations and Jira Solution Architect.

With Atlassian powering their work and Trundl as their partner, Sony Music Publishing is transforming their work and affiliate relationships, meaning in the long run, better service for all of their songwriters.
